Collecting Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

Irwin Allen's Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964–68) sent the submarine Seaview on four seasons of adventures — a substantial vintage run for collectors.

Running from 1964 to 1968, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea followed the crew of the futuristic submarine Seaview across four seasons — the longest of Irwin Allen's 1960s genre series, which gives it a comparatively deep well of imagery and cast material.

The show is anchored by Richard Basehart (Admiral Harriman Nelson) and David Hedison (Captain Lee Crane). Basehart brought film-actor gravitas to the Admiral, while Hedison — later known to a wider audience for other genre and film work — captained the Seaview. Both performers have died, so their signatures now come only from earlier signings rather than new appearances.

Four seasons of the Seaview

The submarine setting and the era's model-and-miniature effects give the series a distinctive visual identity, and signed stills of the leads aboard the Seaview are the most recognisable collected items. As a mid-1960s show, its market blends genuine vintage-signed material with pieces signed later at nostalgia events.

Lead stills

Basehart and Hedison portraits are the core of most collections.

Vintage material

Period-signed items carry the strongest nostalgia value when genuine.

Ephemera

Magazines, cards and licensed items from the era occasionally appear signed.

Collecting notes

With both leads now deceased, provenance carries even more weight than usual:

  • Scrutinise deceased-cast signatures. Basehart and Hedison material cannot be obtained fresh; strong provenance is essential.
  • Match signatures to their era. Compare against period-appropriate references, since a signer's hand changes over time.
  • Favour documented chains of custody. Items with a clear history are far easier to trust than those without.
  • Use certificates as one input among several. Our authentication guide explains how to weigh vintage provenance.
